Tips for Beginners Art Supplies
Thinking of doing art classes as a hobby/therapy and not sure what is the best things to buy.
Here is an list of good art supplies to begin with – as suggested by local fine artist, Liesel Wessels.
Good Paint Brands: Winsor & Newton, Zellen, Daler-Rowney & Lucas Studio
Good Colors to buy (Waterpaint, Acrylic or Oil):
Cadmium Yellow, Lemon Yellow, Cadmium Red, Alaziron Crimson, Cobalt Blue, Ultramarine Blue, Cerulean Blue, Titanium White and Payne’s Gray
Brushes: Soft brush, Should not lose hair and springs back immediately. It is more expensive, but if you keep your brushes clean it will last you longer.
Pencils: Faber-Castell or Daler-Rowney
Get from HB, 2B, 4B, 6B & 8B
Paper: Anything with a little bit more texture and more than 160gsm. Also try different colors.
Canvas: Always Deep Edge, except if you want to frame your work.
Charcoal & Pitt – Most brands are fine
Conté – Get at least 3 different colors
Soft Pastels – Definitely Faber-Castell. I like to buy them individually and not in a packet format.
Putty Rubber – Faber-Castell
Artists Knife – To Sharpen Pencil, charcoal etc
Palet: Glass, Wood or use Transparent Paper + Washing Line Pegs + Hard Surface
Palet Knifes – I prefer the metal types above the plastic ones.
